Keeping your Soil Healthy: A Simple Guide

SHARE

Healthy soil is the foundation of a thriving garden. One effective way to enrich your soil is by incorporating sheep pellets and compost, along with a special addition—comfrey leaves—when planting.

1. Enriching Your Soil with Sheep Pellets and Compost

Sheep pellets are a fantastic organic fertilizer, rich in nutrients that promote strong plant growth. When preparing your garden beds, mix in well-rotted compost to improve soil structure and fertility. This combination not only feeds your plants but also encourages beneficial microbial activity, which is essential for healthy soil.

The image below is from when I planted out 26 garlic cloves. I layered lime, sheep pellets and homemade compost and then raked through the soil directly before planting and watered in well. My comfrey was still dormant so I wasn't able to add any (although now this season I am going to dry drying and storing some of the leaves to use as off season nourishment).

2. The Power of Comfrey Leaves

When planting new seedlings or seeds, consider adding a comfrey leaf directly into the planting hole. Comfrey is known for its high potassium content, which helps with flowering and fruiting. As the leaf breaks down, it releases essential nutrients into the soil, giving your plants a robust start. You can see how it's done in this video :) I break up each leaf into small pieces and add directly to the hole.

3. Harvesting and Rotating

After harvesting your crops, continue this practice. Before replanting, add more sheep pellets, compost, and a comfrey leaf into the planting holes. This simple rotation not only replenishes the nutrients in the soil but also aerates it through the action of plant roots. The more you plant and practice this method, the healthier and more resilient your soil becomes.

4. Benefits of Soil Aeration

Aerated soil promotes better water retention, root growth, and drainage, all crucial for robust plant development. Over time, this practice will lead to a rich, loamy texture that supports diverse plant life.

By incorporating sheep pellets, compost, and comfrey leaves into your planting routine, you'll foster a thriving ecosystem in your garden. Healthy soil leads to healthy plants, creating a sustainable cycle of growth and harvest.

Happy gardening
